Real Progress Starts with Small Steps

You’ve heard all the clichés before:

  • “New year, new you.”
  • “This is my year.”
  • “I’m finally going to reach my goals this time.”

While these are great sentiments, you know that it takes dedication and determination every day to see any kind of real and lasting progress. You can’t just make a list and then walk away. Instead, the process starts by making SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-specific.

Thankfully, there are methods by which you can reach your dreams while getting support from highly-trained professionals, and a group of like-minded people who share your same interests. Get started with this advice:

Set Goals and Be Accountable

Stop for a minute and think about what inspires you. What are the things in life that make you bound of bed in the morning and bravely face the day? For instance, you might want to be in great shape so you can log play time with your kids. Or maybe you’ve noticed others around you getting slower with age, and you don’t want to meet that same fate. You mialso simply enjoy the challenge of consistently pushing yourself to new heights.

Whatever your specific reasons, it’s best to start with a solid goal. From there, you can take realistic steps to meet your wellness regimen. Make sure to celebrate every win. Even “small” gains are important and should be recognized.

Find a Productive Environment

In the same way, you should be aware of your surrounding environment. Psychologists say that those who tend to be around negative people all day (whether that’s co-workers, classmates, or others) will start to feel down in the dumps themselves before too long. You have too much to accomplish to fall into that trap.

Strive to find a space that stimulates your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. It’s also wise to surround yourself with people who share your same goals, and will help motivate you to push harder and be better with each passing day. When you’re accountable to someone else, health experts say you’re more likely to stick with your activity goals.

Try a New Approach

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but maybe the old mindset of fitness just isn’t working for you any longer. You want and deserve a routine where you can achieve targets you’ve set out for yourself, and find a supportive community at the same time.
